Panrita lopi means, literally, an expert of boats – a master boatbuilder. They are the Konjo and Bugis shipwrights of Bulukumba whose hull-first craft is inherited through families in villages such as Ara, Lemo-Lemo, Tanjung Bira and Tana Beru. The regency’s title, Butta Panrita Lopi, means ‘land of the master boatbuilders’.
Knowledge held in families
The proportion rules that shape a hull are passed down within builder families rather than taught from books. A panrita lopi is not certified by an institution; the authority comes from lineage and from boats that have proved themselves at sea.
A craft that still earns
This is not folklore. The yards along the Ara-Bira coast are commercial sites building charter liveaboards and private yachts today, which is exactly why the craft survives – covered further on the heritage page.
Ara's particular role
Ara village has long supplied carvers and carpenters across the archipelago, a story told in a companion piece. To commission a boat from these builders, start at the commissioning desk.
